When words fall short, you can still be understood.
Art therapy offers a way to process, explore, and reconnect through creating. At Chicago Compass Counseling, Elizabeth Yoo-lae Cho 조유래 offers culturally affirming, inclusive art therapy that honors your whole identity. She believes that art making is one of the most radical (and literal) ways to take up space - in the therapy room and in your life.
As a counselor and art therapist, Elizabeth works with BIPOC, LGBTQ+, neurodivergent, and bicultural clients. Sessions are conducted in English, and she welcomes clients who mix Korean and English (한국어). Learn more about Elizabeth →

Meet Art Therapist Elizabeth Yoo-lae Cho, MA, ATC, LPC, ATR-P
"As a practicing visual artist, I understand art materials intimately: how they move, what they hold, how they help us say what we can't yet speak. Art therapy uses visual expression to deepen the therapeutic process, and it's open to everyone. You don't need artistic experience. The goal isn't a beautiful product -- it's the process of discovering what's true for you.
Trained in both art and talk therapy, I guide you through the creative and verbal aspects of healing. I'm here to help you find your way in."
Our Loop Art Therapy Space
The corner office of Chicago Compass Counseling's suite at Michigan and Wacker has dedicated space for art making, with materials within reach, natural light, and river and lake views.
The space is ADA-accessible with elevator access and close to public transportation. You get a convenient downtown location where you can focus on the work.
Art Therapy FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions about Art Therapy at Chicago Compass Counseling
If you're considering art therapy at Chicago Compass Counseling, these questions will help you understand what to expect before your first session.
Q. What's the difference between art therapy and an art class?
Unlike an art class, which focuses on learning or practicing technique, art therapy is psychotherapy that can use art-making as part of the therapeutic process. The focus is not on making “good” art, but on using the creative process to explore what you’re experiencing and working through.
Q. Do I need to be an artist to do art therapy?
People who benefit from art therapy have diverse backgrounds and past experiences with art. Whether you're an experienced artist or new to art making, you don't need to know what to do or how to start. Elizabeth will guide you through the process.
Q. What kinds of materials will I use in art therapy?
That depends on what feels comfortable and useful for you. You'll have access to paint, paper, collage materials, clay, pastels, and more. You and Elizabeth will decide together what to reach for and when. Some days you'll know immediately; other days, you'll discover it as you go.
Q. What if I feel nervous about starting art therapy?
It's okay if you feel nervous. Elizabeth will answer any questions you have and help you ease into the process at a pace that works for you.
Q. How long are art therapy sessions? How often would we meet?
Sessions are 45-55 minutes. Most people begin meeting weekly to build a strong foundation for the work. You and Elizabeth can adjust the frequency as you go, depending on your goals, your schedule, and what feels sustainable. Some clients eventually move to biweekly; others find weekly sessions essential.
Q. Can I do art therapy online?
Yes. Many people meet in our downtown Chicago office to work with materials directly, but virtual sessions are also available. Elizabeth can guide you in finding things in your home to work with. You might be surprised by what's possible with everyday materials.
Q. What should I wear to art therapy sessions?
