Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy in Chicago

A gentle way to understand the different parts of who you are.

What is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?

Internal Family Systems therapy begins with the idea that we all have different parts of ourselves. One part may push you to keep going, another may avoid conflict, and another may stay alert for rejection or danger. These parts often developed to protect you or help you through difficult experiences, even when their strategies are no longer working well.

IFS therapy helps you approach these parts with more care and curiosity. As you understand what they are trying to do and what they need, you may begin to respond to difficult emotions and recurring patterns with greater clarity and a wider range of choices.

At Chicago Compass Counseling, we offer a trauma-informed, relational space to explore these patterns at a pace that feels manageable.

What to Expect from IFS Sessions

In IFS therapy, you and your therapist will begin by noticing the different parts that show up around a problem, emotion, or recurring pattern. You may explore what each part is trying to protect you from, what it fears might happen, and what it needs in order to step back.

The process is collaborative and paced carefully. You will not be asked to force memories, silence difficult feelings, or move faster than feels useful. Over time, parts that have been carrying fear, shame, anger, or responsibility may begin to feel less alone and less overwhelmed.

Your therapist may also draw from mindfulness, body-based awareness, or creative approaches when those tools support the work.
