Are you struggling to feel productive while sheltering-in-place? If so, you’re not alone. Everyone is struggling to operate at 100% right now. And that makes sense. If you’re able to work from home, this is not a relaxing work perk – it’s a mandate to isolate yourself in the midst of a crisis. It’s exhausting. And if you’re one of the millions of unemployed Americans right now, it makes sense if it’s hard to feel motivated to do anything.

In uncertain times, it can feel impossible to set and achieve goals. After all, what are you supposed to accomplish, and by when? The result is a lot of “shoulds” and self-criticism. I’ve heard people share vague goal statements: “I should eat healthier,” “I should really exercise,” “ I should do something creative.” These are not goals – they’re negative judgments about our own behaviors that just make us feel worse.

Instead of focusing on goals, I want you to focus on your values. Goals tell us what to do, by when. Values reveal what is most important.

Values cast a vision for the future. Values answer the question of, “Why bother trying?” Values remind us of what is most important, motivating us to take effective action each day.

We’ve created a workbook just for you to help you create a vision of values-based living during the quarantine. The workbook reviews how you can leverage values in 5 key quadrants of self-care:

  • Physical Self-Care
  • Spiritual Self-Care
  • Emotional and Mental Self-Care
  • Professional Self-Care
  • Financial Self-Care

This is a great exercise to do for yourself, with your remote work team, or with your family members. It’s based on motivational science. If you can imagine yourself in the distant future, looking back on today, you can compare what things would look like if you were at your very best, and at your very worst.
