Frequently asked questions about Video Counseling and Online Therapy:
Q. Will my insurance cover video therapy?
Due to the national crisis, most major insurers are now covering the full cost of video therapy and waiving copays for telehealth. We will verify your benefits before your first appointment so you can be fully-informed of any potential costs.
Q. What happens at my first online counseling appointment?
Your first consultation is typically 60-80-minutes in length. Your counselor will carefully review your intake paperwork before starting your video intake session. The first part of the meeting will focus on understanding your goals and values. Your counselor will then spend time assessing relevant background information.
In the final part of the meeting, your counselor will offer you a menu of options based on your goals. Your recommendations will include a variety of options, including continuing with online counseling, trying out strategies on your own, or pursuing other behavior change resources in-person.
Q. Is video therapy as effective as in-person counseling?
Research shows that video counseling is just as effective as in-person counseling. The most important success factors are the same as in-person counseling, including the fit between you and your counselor, your counselor’s experience and specialization, and the relationship your counselor builds with you to help you achieve success.
Q. What would disqualify someone from video therapy?
Online therapy is not recommended if you have limited access to a wireless connection, or are unable to find secure, private places to talk either at home or at work. It’s important to have both access to the internet and the ability to find a private space to talk.
Q. How do I get access to my video therapy session?
Your counselor will set you up to receive a link to your counseling session either through email. You can click on the link if you plan to use your computer, or download the Simple Practice Telehealth App if you plan to use your phone. Before your first session, you will receive step-by-step instructions via email to get started with our secure video counseling platform.
Q. Can I vary phone appointments with video sessions?
Yes. You and your counselor can decide on how to set up appointments that are convenient and accessible for you.
